A city official has been published with a salary cut after he was just taking his lunch break three minutes early.

The employee, working at the waterworks bureau in the city of Kobe, began his meal break early 26 times over the time of seven months, a city representative told.

“The meal break is from 12 noon to 1 pm. He cleared out his work area before the break,” the representative said. Thus, the 64-year-old got a half day pay deducted as fine. Clearly, the worker was violating public service law since it expected representatives to focus on their jobs.

The worker’s bosses later called a news meeting to apologise and an agency official stated, “It’s regrettable that this misconduct occurred. We’re sorry.”
