In December 2017, the BJP MLA had hit the headlines when he had declared Indian captain Virat Kohli and Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma’s marriage as ‘unpatriotic’ as they had got married in Italy.

He had lashed out at Kohli questioning his choice to get married on a foreign land and not in India. “Smash, Krishna, Yudhishthira wedded in India… Nobody goes to an outside land to get married as they did. He earned his money and fame in India and took it abroad,” Shakya had said.

Virat and Anushka had got hitched at a private function on December 11, 2017, in Tuscany, Italy with just family and dear companions in participation. Later they had facilitated a reception in New Delhi on December 21 and a grand gala affair in Mumbai on December 26, 2018.
