A Chinese couple who stole a diamond worth 300,000 dirhams (about $81,000) from a shop in Dubai were arrested inside 20 hours from the Mumbai airport, authorities say.
The 3.27-carat jewel was recovered in India after it was smuggled out of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) inside the stomach of the lady, an authority was refered to as saying by the Gulf News today.
The couple, in their 40s, stole the diamond from a jewelry shop in Dubai’s commercial business district Deira and fled the nation.
They were arrested as they were traveling to Hong Kong by means of Mumbai. The couple was taken back to the UAE with Interpol and the Indian police, the every day said.
The police released videos of the CCTV in the store, which showed the couple entering the shop in Deira’s Gold Souk.
The footage showed the man the man diverting the staff by asking about stones of specific details while the lady was seen going towards the entrance. She was seen opening the glass gate of the showcase and after that taking the white-colored diamond.
Colonel Adel Al Joker, Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, said the couple admitted to taking the diamond.
